7 important things every 20-something should know about money

7 important things every 20-something should know about money7 important things every 20-something should know about moneyMy co-founder at Digital Press said something to me a while ago that fundamentally changed my perspective on money. He said, We havent personally experienced a recession yet.I was only 18 years old when the markets crashed in 2008.I hadnt yet stepped into the real world. I didnt have a full-time job, or a working relationship with money. I didnt truly have context or a larger understanding of what a crash meant, and how it was impacting peoples lives.Looking back, of course, it makes sense why my parents were overly stressed during my senior year of high school. I can at least imagine what they must have been feeling. But I would be naive to think I truly know what that sort of burden feels like myself. At 28 years old, I try to remember that one day I will most likely experience a similar economic burden. When youre out of school, and you start working your first jo b, and even as you begin to make strides in your career, it can be very easy to think that whats currently happening will happen this way forever. As soon as you start making good money, you assume the good money will keep flowing.Older, wiser, mora experience people than me know this is far from the truth. As a result, I try very hard to remember that life ebbs and flows. Markets go up, and markets go down. Opportunity will boom, and opportunity will slow. And those who remain successful over the long term optimize for these waves of change. Here are 7 things I encourage all 20-somethings to keep at the forefront of their minds when it comes to personal finances1. Its not about how much you make. Its about how much you save.My dad used to say this all growing up, but again, this is a lesson you have to feel and encounter in your own life to truly understand.I know plenty of people who make $250,000 per year, and save $5,000 per year. They live terrific lives, but they also put themsel ves at an unnecessary amount of risk.Conversely, I know people who make $80,000 per year, and save $20,000 per year. They live modestly, but they set themselves up for success in the long run.I strongly encourage you to live like the latter. And as your income scales, so too should the amount you save.2. Never underestimate Cash On HandWhen I first started making a little bit of money, I put everything I had into stocks.I wanted to start seeing my savings compound on themselves. This was great in theory, right up until the moment I decided to leave my 95 job and become an entrepreneur. Suddenly, having money in stocks, although liquid, felt unnecessarily risky. If the markets tanked tomorrow, that would severely affect my safety net.Part of saving money means having a balance between cash you invest, and cash you keep on hand. A good rule of thumb a mentor of mine gave me was to always have at least 3 months of living expenses on hand. Personally, I prefer 612 months.3. Live by the 5 0/25/25 modelSince the moment I graduated college, Ive taxed all of my side-hustle income at the highest tax bracket. The reason I do this is two foldFirst, I wanted to begin cultivating the mentality that one day I would end up in the highest tax bracket. And second, I never wanted to end a year and realize I owed more money than I had set aside. I wanted to pay myself a bonus at the end of the year - not need to withdraw even more money to make up for my math error. In the same way I tax all of my side-hustle income at nearly 50% (meaning I put 50% of everything I make away in an account to pay taxes with at the end of the year), I also try to save at least 25% of the remaining 50%. So that means for every $100 I make, I put $50 away for taxes, $25 into savings, and leave $25 to use as income I can spend on living expenses, travel, restaurants, etc.The reason I love this model is because it keeps all my primary variables constant (taxes + savings), and if I ever want to spend more o r upgrade my lifestyle, then I need to find ways to make more money overall - instead of taking money out of taxes or savings.4. Have a plan for the worse-case scenarioOne of the biggest reasons Im so adamant about saving money is to be able to navigate another recession.Every 20-something, regardless of how much you make (I was saving $20 per month back when I first graduated college and was making just about nadir wage), you should work to save and build a financial foundation. Its one of those things that seems impossible or even insignificant when you arent making very much, but you have to continuously remind yourself that small steps really do add up.$50 will turn into $100.$100 will become $500.$500 will become $2,000.And before you know it, youll have $5,000 in your savings account. The first few years of saving are always the hardest. But after about 3 years of cultivating the habit, and as soon as you see that first comma in your savings account, your entire mentality will change - and youll realize the value of saving over the long term.5. Work to create multiple streams of revenueEspecially in todays world (where Millennials struggle to find jobs - and the Internet is an easily accessible resource), its imperative that you build multiple streams of revenue for yourself. For example, here are mineI pay myself a salary out of my company, Digital Press.I published a book, Confessions of a Teenage Gamer, as well as a handful of smaller eBooks on my website.I am an advisor to a couple blockchain companies (paid as a consultant)I wrote for Inc Magazine for about 3 years (and was paid per pageview), and recently started publishing my work under Mediums paid program.Your goal should be to create 7 streams of revenue for yourself, so that if one declines, the others can keep the ship moving in the meantime (while you either repair what went wrong, or create a new stream of revenue for yourself).*Bonus my belastung tip here would be to take all streams of r evenue except your primary (salary) and have them go directly into a savings/investment account. This will force you to continue living within your means, while working to increase the amount youre able to save or invest.6. Spend time around financially prudent peopleThis is a statement that should scale based on income level.Again, there are some millionaires who spend every penny they make. There are other millionaires who save or invest a large % of their income. You want to hang around the ones who live like the latter, and not the former. The biggest reason this is so important is because, especially in your early 20s, you wont have very much extra income to save or invest - which means, of what you do have, you want to put it to good use. And if you hang around people who blow their money, chances are, you will too.Instead, I encourage you to seek out people who are very responsible with money. For me, I sought out people I knew were successful and yet didnt live overly lavish lifestyles family friends, people in my network, etc. I wanted to know how they treated their money, so I could learn how to do the same.7. Dont ever bet it allIf you are ever faced with an opportunity for a financial upside that requires you to put it all on the line, do not accept it.When youre young, these kinds of decisions are fairly easy to recover from. Even if you were to bet it all and lose, you would still have years upon years to make it back. Youd be fine. But the reason I strong discourage this way of operating is because itis the beginning of an even worse habit that can linger over time. You dont want to get used to betting it all. You want to get in the habit of betting what youre willing to lose, without compromising your long-term financial position. This article was originally published on Medium.

How to Stay Positive During a Long Job Search

How to Stay Positive During a Long Job SearchHow to Stay Positive During a Long Job SearchLosing your job is devastating both financially and emotionally. You feel rejected and worried about the future. You embark on a job search as quickly as you can with the hope that youll find a job quickly. When the weeks without an offer turn into months, you begin to despair. Your severance package, if you were lucky enough to have one, and unemployment insurance has kept you from dipping into your savings, but those resources wont last forever. In a tough job market, even those who are extremely talented can be out of work for months at a time. While it is hard to be optimistic that things will turn around soon, it is imperative that you keep a positive attitude. Your own emotional well-being, as well as the impression you make on potential employers, depend on it. Here are some things you can do to keep your chin up when it feels like your job search is in dire straits. Treat Your Job Sea rch Like a Job That means you should spend about eight hours on it each day. Get up in the morning at the time you did when you were employed and stop working no later than when you left your job for the day. Being proactive may contribute to your positive outlook. Dont Forget to Take Breaks While you should spend a respectable number of hours on your job search, you should take time away from it too. You must take a lunch break every day, for example, and spend a few hours in the evening doing something you enjoy. Read, work out or spend time on a hobby. During this downtime, dont pore over job announcements, rework your resume or practice job interviewing techniques. There is one exception. You can network during your downtime. Make plans to meet friends or acquaintances for lunch, dinner or coffee. Take the Time to Do Things You Dont Have Time to Do While Youre Working The one good thing about unemployment is having a somewhat flexible schedule. It gives you the ability to occasionally take time off during the day to do things you couldnt do when you had (and wont be able to do when you once again have) a job with regular hours. So if you want to go on your childs school field trip during the week, go for it. Have lunch with an old friend who can cheer you up. You can make up for lost job search time that evening. Take on Household Chores You Dont Have Time for When You Are Employed When you were employed, theres a good chance you came home from work exhausted each day. The last thing you may have wanted to do was tackle a chore like cleaning out the closets or painting the den. Since you will probably tend to your job search from home, you wont have a daily commute to deal with. Therefore, your day will end a bit earlier, and you may not be quite as tired as you were when you had to contend with traffic or crowded buses and trains. Youll also have some excess energy to get rid of before you retire for the evening. Those chores you put off can be just the thing you need to help you feel like youve accomplished something concrete. Volunteer Look for a cause that you feel strongly about- one that can also use your skills and talents- and donate your time and energy to it. If you can work on this project during weekends when you wont be working on your job search anyway, that would be best. If you cant, it may be worth taking a few hours off from job hunting. Volunteering may provide a great opportunity to make connections, and it will allow you to do something really good. It can make you feel better when you are helping others. Just be sure not to abandon this gig entirely when you find a paying job. Learn a New Skill Learning something new can make you feel better about yourself in addition to making you more marketable. Since this is a time when you may not have a lot of extra money to spare, look for free online courses and low-cost courses available through continuing education in your community. Join a Job Hunting Support Group You can find a list of these on resources such as the Riley Guide. Also, check local libraries, houses of worship and community centers. Share your experiences with others who are in the same situation.

How to Handle the Dreaded Salary Interview Question

How to Handle the Dreaded Salary einstellungsgesprch QuestionHow to Handle the Dreaded Salary Interview QuestionHow to Handle the Dreaded Salary Interview QuestionWhen it comes to salary negotiation, the ball is more in your court than you may think.Weve all come to that moment during an interview when the hiring manager asks the dreaded question So, what are your salary requirements? How you handle yourself during the minutes that follow may mean the difference between walking out with a job offer or walking out empty handed. Heres how to answer this common interview question.Find the middle groundNegotiating salary when an offer is leid yet on the table may make you feel like youre walking a tightrope. Answer the salary question too high and you might price yourself out of an offer give a figure thats too low and you run the risk of appearing desperate. Like Goldilocks, the key is to find the middle ground.A good job search involves preliminary salary research it will be worth your effort to find out what typical salaries are being offered to others with similar credentials in comparable roles and industries. unterstellung sample salaries will help you determine the sweet spot that most employees will be willing to pay a new hire in your desired role. When opting to low-ball a salary, know full well that your perceived self-worth may come across in your answer. Before answering the salary interview question, be sure to think about how youll feel knowing that the company you might work for doesnt know your true worth. Youve worked hard to earn your qualifications, and now is the time to translate all of your knowledge and expertise into actual numbers. Its not easy, but it can be done.Do your homeworkWhen you browse through job postings online, you have no doubt experienced the frustration of not being able to spot any salary information whatsoever. Employers keep this information relatively secret, but you can access ballpark salary expectation figures from we bsites such as Payscale.com, Salary.com, and BLS.gov. The salary comparison features on some of these sites will provide you with a good head start. If youre seeking a position in healthcare, for example, you can browse job categories to get a sense of alternative job titles to research The salary for a Nurse Practitioner can be compared to salaries of similar subspecialties like NP-ER and NP-Specialty Care. While all three require a masters degree and certification, the in-depth training of the third title warrants a higher salary. Walking into an interview armed with recent salary data posted by federal statisticians will provide you with confidence to answer any interview question about salary expectations, and that confidence will extend to other parts of your conversation with the hiring manager.Salary research can enable you to effectively field sticky interview questions about your salary expectations. As you search on sites such as Glassdoor, Indeed, and other job aggregator s, youll discover that most positions do not list a salary, but some employers may request a salary history from interested applicants. These businesses may be testing the waters by asking candidates up front for their salary histories this also helps them get an idea of applicants expectations, as well. Since the most significant determinant of future salary is past salary, this essential data gives employers ample insight when setting new ranges. Employers will typically pay a new employee somewhere in the range of 1015 percent more than the persons last salary, which is why knowing what youve made over your past employment history is of such interest to them. They are trying to determine your monetary value so that they, too, can negotiate for the best person at the lowest price. However, this interview question just became illegal in a number of places in the U.S., so the salary-negotiation tactic is going out of style.RelatedDont Answer These Off-Limits Interview QuestionsBe a little calculatingLets go back to the interview question What are your salary requirements? Notice that the question does not ask how much would you like to make in the job position, but what you will require in order to accept. One way to look at this is to present a figure that is a calculation of gross salary plus benefits, not your net wages. Your net or take-home pay is considerably less and is not the figure you will want to share. Think in terms of total compensation salary plus medical, dental, life insurance, 401K or 403B accounts, tuition remission, and other benefits unique to your industry.Another highly-effective approach is to state your baseline salary expectation as a product of your highest monthly salary previously earned. So, while you may not have always been compensated at this high rate each and every month, you can take that intermittent increase and use it to substantiate a higher potential salary at this new employer.See the big pictureBecause so many empl oyers propose benefits packages that are often promoted as salary equivalents, why not give yourself the leverage to do the same? When youre seeking a new job position, youre looking for the whole package. Employers, too, are seeking additional benefits from their prospective employees. While you may find an employer who tries to hire staff at the cheapest rates possible, many other employers are more realistic, realizing that offering the going rate will get them the most loyal employees in the long run.As holding down turnover rates is of primary concern to most employers, you can bet that loyalty is a priority for many companies. While employers do prefer to hold the cards when it comes to keeping salaries private, youll find that the most successful companies tend to offer the most equitable, competitive salaries to keep and hold their talents what they offer can serve as a benchmark for other companies.Find your focusIf you think you are unique in your distaste for salary nego tiation while other candidates can run circles around you in their ability to advocate for a ritterlich salary on their own behalf, nothing could be further from the truth. Knowing your worth, knowing what the market is paying, and knowing that the process of wage negotiation is a two-way street will hopefully embolden you when it comes to expressing your salary expectations.Like you, employers are doing their research, making sure that their offer will be within the norm for their particular industry and for the specific job position theyve been asked to fill. To break employers out of the baseline thinking pattern, your job will be to get them to focus on YOU the candidate who can deliver more than the next guy. Ironically, the best way to get them to focus on you is to focus your attention on them What are their issues, what are their goals, where do their problems lie, and what do they need to move ahead in their markets? Conveying that you have their interests in mind not jus t your own will go far in convincing them that you are that one-in-a-million candidate who is worth your weight in gold.Click on the following link for more advice on negotiating salary. Before you start talking numbers, your resume has to get you into the door.
